Coos Bay Weather Guide: Oregon Coast Climate Explained

Coos Bay's weather is entirely unlike Southern Oregon's interior valleys. Cool summers, wild winter storms, and marine fog make the South Coast a unique weather zone.

Coos Bay sits on Oregon's South Coast at Coos Bay — the largest coastal bay in Oregon. Its weather is entirely controlled by the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the most distinct climate zones in Southern Oregon.

The Marine Climate Explained

The Pacific Ocean is the complete arbiter of Coos Bay's weather. In summer, cold upwelling offshore keeps sea surface temperatures in the 50s°F, which chills the air flowing onshore. This is why Coos Bay summers max out around 65°F while Medford, just 90 miles inland, hits 100°F on the same afternoon.

The marine layer — a low deck of fog and stratus clouds — frequently blankets the South Coast from May through August. Mornings are often overcast, sometimes not burning off until early afternoon, then socking back in by evening.

Winter Storms: Storm-Watching Country

Winter is when the South Coast shows its wild side. Pacific storm systems arrive directly from the open ocean, bringing:

Heavy sustained rain (60+ inches annually)

High winds, often 40–60 mph during storms

Large ocean swells crashing against the headlands

Dramatic storm-watching conditions

Storm-watching is an actual tourist activity on the South Coast. Cape Arago, Shore Acres State Park, and Bastendorff Beach are prime viewing spots during winter storms.

Temperature: Incredibly Stable

Coos Bay's temperature range is one of the narrowest of any city in Oregon:

July average high: 65°F

January average low: 38°F

All-time record high: 93°F (rare)

All-time record low: 14°F (rare)

This stability makes Coos Bay genuinely comfortable year-round if you don't mind overcast skies and rain.

Planning Your Visit
